The stars of The Weighting Game share their tips on losing weight with A Current Affair by Mike Munro.

7 February 2000

There aren't many people who've never been on a diet. For some, weight loss is an obsession. But for Vince, Big Jim, Angie, Robin, Amanda and Rhonda, it has been the path to national celebrity.

Last year they all featured on the Channel Nine program The Weighting Game. With varying degrees of success, everyone lost weight and managed to keep it off, even after the cameras stopped rolling.

Vince, the lovable cop, was 148kg. He's shed 30kg and, thanks to an exercise program, has replaced fat with muscle.

Big Jim has dropped a whopping 52kg and now weighs in at 248kg.

Angie took the most drastic measure to achieve her weight loss goal - she had surgery to insert a lap band that makes her stomach smaller. It's paid off, because she's now 23kg lighter.

Robin was the quiet achiever. He went on the Gutbusters Program and has watched his waist measurement drop by 15cm to 120cm.

Amanda wanted to lose weight so she could get pregnant. She joined the Big Girls Club and managed to shed 11kg, but has had a tough time over Christmas because of another miscarriage. She and her husband are now considering adoption.

Then there's Rhonda, who says her incredible weight loss has transformed her life. She used a medically supervised liquid diet called Modifast and has lost a staggering 83 kg, half her body weight!

Vince: was 148kg, now 118 kg = lost 30kg
How: Vince exercised for two hours, three times a week ΓΉ usually half an hour on the treadmill and one and a half hours of light repetition weights. He changed his eating habits and regularly ate lighter meals (with lots of protein and carbohydrates) to keep up his metabolism.
Pros: It was easy to incorporate into his life.
Cons: Results are a long time coming and he must set aside time to exercise.

Big Jim: was 300kg, now 248kg = lost 52kg
How: Big Jim increased his exercise regime: he hired a personal trainer, played squash and learnt kickboxing.
Pros: Increasing fitness increases metabolism.
Cons: For effective, long-term weight loss a calorie-controlled diet needs to accompany exercise.

Angie: Was 101kg, now 88kg = lost 23kg
How: Angie had a lap band surgically inserted to make her stomach smaller.
Pros: Requires instant willpower because you cannot overeat.
Cons: Major invasive surgery and an expensive voluntary procedure.

Robin: Was 135cm (waistline), now 120cm = lost 15cm
How: Robin went on the Gutbusters Program, an educational program designed for men, which suggests exercise and low fat alternatives. It encourages altering your lifestyle ie have a beer but don't eat the beer nuts.
Pros: Designed for men only and not performance based.
Cons: Relies on self-discipline.

Amanda: lost 11kg
How: Amanda joined the Big Girls Group, a support group for overweight women who need to lose weight to fall pregnant. Diet instruction isn't given. It's more of a meeting style to see how you're going.
Pros: Very supportive talking to others in similar situation.
Cons: There are no guarantees and it's not very strict.

Rhonda: was 166kg, now 83kg = lost 83kg
How: Rhonda used Modifast: a medically supervised liquid diet for clinically obese people.
Pros: Very effective and weight is lost quickly.
Cons: Involves unrealistic eating patterns and has a terrible taste.
